‘Saga’ Volume 1 - Graphic Novel review

I haven’t been big on comics lately so I decided to pick up the first volume of a series that’s had large talk. First off, it’s such a boring title. I’m going to write a rival series simply called ‘Chronicles’. I mean, if this series was called Vulgar, sexy, space saga then I would get that but there’s nothing there for me with this title.

With that silly argument aside, the world of Saga has an edgy Grimm Fairy Tale feel with Star Wars fantasy and scope. A civil war is going on in the galaxy and we open on two rival military forces who are lovers and give birth to some forbidden child. The fact that the story establishes these two as nobody’s with nothing special and that the daughter grows up to be just an ordinary girl, it doesn’t make much sense to me seeing as the plot revolves around the government/empire type sending military, bounty hunters and all those sorts to go and get this baby. We’re supposed to understand that a nobody baby from two nobody parents is this precious thing that must be recovered. This brings me to my main point. It’s not terribly well written. The characters often say very goofy and inappropriate things for the situations. There’s a tense and dramatic thing and then it’s ruined by me rolling my eyes at the dialogue that seems to be written by a 13 year old boy. There are a lot of different occasions like our protagonists spouting off things like “Violence is stupid, okay” or calling things retarded in climactic parts, really feels out of place and out of character every time something like this happens. They’re obviously writing for a contemporary reader but what happens when time moves on and a new generation with new perspective comes around? Then you have writing material that didn’t age well at all. I think the edgy, hipster vibe they are going for will ultimately break what could have been this stories potential. You get this story that wants to be something of a space opera type epic but just comes off childish and awkward.

The art style isn’t anything new but does offer a more artistic vibe than a lot of the more mainstream comics that all look so plastic. The shades look very one dimensional at times like they did it off a free software available to the public. Not all the time though. The textures and colors used for the Robot empire characters iare pretty original and unique with the overall design. Too bad we get those characters spouting off lines like “Fuck the fuck off”. It’s just so out of place and childish. Imagine if Luke Skywalker at one point just said something like “This planet is fucking retarded, you fucking fuck”. It’s just out of place and so obviously trying to be edgy.

There’s potential, seeings as this is a pretty new series. Volume two hasn’t even been published yet and i’ve got enough intrigue to want to see more and I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt in that it could find it’s tone as it goes. For now, the writing is poor, the art can be fairly minimal in times and in others, character designs and colors can really pop.

‘Saga’ Volume 1 = C-

So much potential watered down by immature writing.
